Grade 7-10 Co-ed Speed Ball

SPEED Lacrosse is a 3v3 small field format game, which only requires a short lacrosse stick.

Games are played with a soft (sponge) lacrosse ball. Games are won by the first team to score 4 goals and each game is limited to 4 minutes long.

Due to player safety, the following rules are in play:

  • NO BODY CHECKING or bull dodges (A player may not force or back their way into position in front of the goal to take a shot using brute force and pushing defenders out of the way)

  • No wrap checks, slap checks or cross checking allowed.

  • Stick checking only allowed for loose, ground ball play.

  • No full field defense press allowed; loss of possession requires players to drop back to their goal,

  • Each new offensive possession requires the ball to go around the goal to start the new offensive set. *exception: intercepted passes (turnovers) initiates fast breaks.

  • A soft, 6 second pass clock,

  • No wind up shots,

  • A defense player must assume the goalie position, which makes the game a 3v2 situation, the goalie CANNOT go to their knees to play goalie and there is no crease.

  • A soft sideline for out of bounds balls.

  • One game official will officiate the game.

The game is intended to be fun and competitive, while also providing an opportunity to introduce lacrosse to new players by reducing the cost barrier for equipment to just a stick.  An intro clinic should have been considered prior to the start of game season.

What it develops:

  •  Improves stick skills through rapid touches and decisions,

  • Off-ball movement /fitness (trying running around non stop for 4 minutes),

  • Defense relies upon footwork, stick-up in passing lanes and communication,

  • Offense relies upon a man-up situation/fast-breaks, where locating the open player and getting that player the ball.

What it eliminates:

  • Ball hogs/black hole players, and

  • Brute force (defensively or offensively).
